About This Property
Set on land that traces directly back to a 2,952-acre Republic of Texas land grant awarded in 1838 to Dr. Josiah Wheat — an early settler from Alabama and the first documented physician in Tyler County — this remarkable East Texas property carries a legacy unlike anything else on the market. Dr. Wheat donated 200 acres for the establishment of the county seat in 1845, the very ground that became the town of Woodville itself.
The earliest portion of the home was built in 1848 by William G. McDaniel, who constructed two rooms downstairs and two upstairs. Its most memorable architectural feature is the gallery above the front porch — a covered upper veranda where, in the early days of Tyler County, jurors slept during court sessions when housing in the young town was scarce.
The property passed through several distinguished hands before being purchased in 1918 by James Edward Wheat, great-grandson of Dr. Josiah Wheat and a prominent East Texas attorney who served as the first mayor of Woodville, president of the Woodville School Board for nearly thirty years, and the first chairman of the Texas State Historical Survey Committee.
Recognized with a Texas State Historical Marker erected in 1970, this is not simply a historic house — it is the founding story of Woodville, preserved in wood and brick in the heart of the East Texas Piney Woods.
Located in Woodville, Tyler County, Texas — the Dogwood Capital of Texas — nestled among the rolling, pine-forested hills of one of the most beautiful corners of the Lone Star State.
The Grounds
Bathed in natural light and brimming with timeless character, the Wheat House offers a rare opportunity to inhabit a piece of living history. Five generous bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms unfold across a floorplan defined by soaring ceilings, original heart pine floors, and woodwork of exceptional quality.
A grand fireplace anchors the home, presiding over a large formal dining room and an expansive living room — spaces that feel both intimate and effortlessly suited to entertaining.
The sunroom is nothing short of a revelation: a wall of windows dissolves the boundary between interior and exterior, flooding the space with ever-changing light. The kitchen pays homage to the home’s layered history with a 1940s Chambers stove in beautiful working condition.
The primary suite offers a private retreat complete with a dedicated fireplace and a dressing room with a full bath. Beyond the threshold, a classic white picket fence frames the front of the property, while mature magnolias cast their broad shade across the lawn and azaleas erupt in seasonal color. A graceful gazebo offers a peaceful destination within the garden.
Set on approximately 0.7 acres — a cohesive portrait of Southern grace at its finest.

★ Home of James Edward Wheat ★
Located on a 2,952.2-acre tract of Republic of Texas land awarded in 1838 to Dr. Josiah Wheat, an early settler of Tyler County, and donor in 1847 of 200 acres for county seat, soon named Woodville. In 1918 the house was purchased by James Edward Wheat, son of Light Nowlin and Martha Bryant Wheat, and great-grandson of Dr. Josiah Wheat. James Edward Wheat, an attorney, was President of the Woodville School Board (1920–49), First Mayor of the City after its incorporation in 1929, and member of the Texas Centennial Commission, 1936. He served on the Texas State Prison Board (1942–48), was Secretary (1950) and Chairman (1951–52) of the Executive Committee of the State Democratic Party, and also First Chairman of the Texas State Historical Survey Committee (1953–59). He enlarged and improved this house on his ancestral land.
